Blackhawk #221, Beware the Moon Monster!, Checkerboard Top, DC Comics, 1966

VG+ Condition. There is wear on a couple of corners, some stress lines around staples, color fading, and foxing. Mid-grade Silver Age with the collectible “Checkerboard Top” strip.

DC Comics introduced the checkerboard design at the top of their comic book covers in 1966 as part of a branding strategy. The idea behind this checkerboard pattern, which appeared on titles from February to August of that year, was to make DC’s comics more visually distinct and recognizable on the crowded newsstands of the time.
