Public Image Ltd -“First Issue” – Limited Silver Vinyl Reissue
Available for the first time ever in the US. In 1976 Johnny Rotten and the Sex Pistols set the agenda for punk’s year zero with ‘Anarchy In The UK’, a song that summed up the spirit, sound and attitude of the band in one shocking package. Two years later, the Sex Pistols were in tatters, but Rotten was as unsentimental as you’d hope. He reverted to his real name – John Lydon – and set about forming a band whose very identity kicked against press and media manipulation. Featuring bassist Jah Wobble, drummer Jim Walker and guitarist Keith Levene, his new group were Public Image Limited.
The public image would be limited. PiL were a very distinct prospect from the Pistols, founded with a greater thought for rhythm, and with a sound that turned the page from snarling punk to a more experimental sound fusing rock, dance, folk, ballet, pop and dub. But that’s not to say Lydon’s new outfit lacked vitriol. It is, essentially, the sound of four people letting loose in a studio – and not caring what anyone else thought. The album was never officially released in the USA back in the day, it’s sound considered too un-commercial by major-labels for an American release.
“First Issue” has been lovingly reproduced from the original UK 1978 release and this special reissue also comes with a clutch of post-punk era treasures. The CD edition is an expanded, two-disc set with an almost hour-long (unedited) October 1978 BBC audio interview with John Lydon, plus rare B-side “The Cowboy Song” from the period, and two stickers. The 2023 LP edition includes an expanded gatefold jacket, an archive replica fold-out poster, a PiL sticker, insert, and Download Card for the album, the archival BBC interview, and “The Cowboy Song.” All of which were approved and coordinated with John Lydon and his personal management.
Lil Peep – “Live Forever”
Live Forever is the second solo mixtape by American singer/rapper Lil Peep. It was first released on December 2, 2015, two months after his first mixtape, Lil Peep; Part One.
The mixtape was preceded by two singles: “Flannel” and “Haunt U”, and three additional singles were issued posthumously.
The mixtape was later re-released on the seventh anniversary of the mixtape’s release in 2022.
Municipal Waste -“Hazardous Mutation” – reissue
Reeking of punk attitude and bursting with uptempo thrashcore enthusiasm, Municipal Waste ride the divide between old school mosh and simple hardcore purity with an updated take on a timeless sound.
Coming on like ‘Dealing It’ meets ‘Spreading The Disease’ the band veer between lunatic Thrash and hardcore crosover stomp.
This was the first album featuring ex-Discordance Axis drum king Dave Witte supplying the beat.
Lou Donaldson – “Midnight Creeper” – Blue Note Tone Poet Series
Alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson hadn’t recorded for Blue Note since 1963 when he returned to the label in 1967 and began a new chapter in his lengthy career. Sweet Papa Lou had helped lay Blue Note’s soul jazz foundation alongside Hammond B3 organists including Jimmy Smith, Baby Face Willette, and Big John Patton going back to the late-1950s thru the early-60s on standout dates including his own Here ‘Tis, Good Gracious!, and The Natural Soul. Upon his return Donaldson pushed ahead with a new hard-grooving sound on 1967’s Alligator Bogaloowhich was the first of his many collaborations with organ virtuoso Lonnie Smith and also featured the young guitar star George Benson and the impossibly funky drummer Leo Morris (aka Idris Muhammad). On Mr. Shing-A-Ling he added the bluesy trumpeter Blue Mitchell to the mix, and for 1968’s soul jazz manifesto Midnight Creeper he got the whole gang back together for a greasy 6-song set including the jaunty title track, “Love Power,” “Bag of Jewels,” and “Dapper Dan.”
Alice In Chains – “Rainier Fog” – Smog Color Variant
Alice in Chains’ “Rainier Fog” is a haunting auditory journey that immerses listeners in a dense atmosphere of introspection and melancholy. Released in 2018, the album’s title track, “Rainier Fog,” encapsulates the band’s signature grunge sound, blending gritty guitar riffs with Layne Staley’s successor William DuVall’s soulful vocals. The music unfolds like a misty landscape, mirroring the album’s title inspired by the ominous Seattle weather. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing and reflection, weaving a narrative that navigates through personal struggles and the passage of time. The song’s dynamic shifts create an emotional ebb and flow, accentuated by Jerry Cantrell’s masterful guitar work. “Rainier Fog” stands as a testament to Alice in Chains’ ability to capture the essence of the Pacific Northwest’s moody ambience while delivering a powerful and resonant musical experience. Cocteau Twins – “Milk & Kisses” + “Four Calendar Cafe” Reissues
Released in March 1996, Milk & Kisses is the eighth and final studio album by Cocteau Twins. And like it’s predecessor, 1993’s Four Calendar Café, it’s yet to be formally released on vinyl outside Europe. That all changes next January when 4AD will reissue both titles in the United States. The second of two albums Cocteau Twins released via Fontana / Capitol Records after their long association with 4AD ended in 1990 with Heaven or Las Vegas, the band warmed the waters for Milk & Kisses with a pair of exceptional EPs where they took their music to new places, Twinlights and Otherness – the first largely acoustic, the second their only sanctioned remixes (done with Seefeel’s Mark Clifford). A period of high creativity for the band, renewed after a turbulent time, they recorded and produced Milk & Kisses between their September Sound studio in London and the coastal town of Pors Poulhan in Brittany, France. Featuring the singles ‘Tishbite’ and ‘Violaine’ and fan favourites such as ‘Serpentskirt’ and ‘Treasure Hiding’, the album is a cathartic listen too with MOJO saying in a glowing review that the album’s title “accurately intimates it’s soothing, healing powers.” Ultimately, Milk & Kisses also proved to be their swan song, bringing the curtain down on 14 years of wonder to leave an incredible legacy that new generations continue to discover to this day. 4AD are delighted to announce that they’re working with the band on reissuing both Four Calendar Café and Milk & Kisses in the United States, with CD and black vinyl editions of both titles coming out on January 12th 2024. To do this, Robin Guthrie returned to his original studio mixes and has delivered stunning, brand new 24-bit masters of both titles.
