Fela Kuti’s music is characterized by a vibrant and energetic fusion of various genres, primarily Afrobeat. The sound is driven by a rhythmic and infectious combination of traditional African rhythms, highlife, jazz, funk, and psychedelic influences. Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician and political activist, often incorporated brass instruments, percussion, and repetitive, pulsating grooves into his compositions.

The prominent use of horns, especially saxophones and trumpets, contributes to the powerful and dynamic nature of his music. Fela’s songs are known for their extended instrumental sections, allowing for improvisation and showcasing the skills of the instrumentalists in his ensemble, Africa 70.

Fela Kuti’s music also carries a strong political and social message, addressing issues such as corruption, injustice, and inequality. His unique sound, combined with thought-provoking lyrics and a captivating stage presence, has left a lasting impact on the world of music and activism.

This album was Fela’s full-on sonic revenge on the military regime that attacked and brutalized him and his compound in Lagos twice in 1974. The raids on his Kalakuta Republic were an attempt by the Nigerian police and army to silence Fela. Brought to trial on trumped up charges with no substantive evidence, the court dismissed the case, set him free, and made him an even larger hero to the people of Nigeria. The album narrative delves deeply in the post-colonial corruption of Nigerian institutions and the grueling and brutal manner the police and the military treated all unfortunate enough to be caught up in their grip.
